It has been a long time ago when I started working on the IT industry (1998). After I finished my career as Computer Engineer at one of the most recognized public educational institutes in Mexico to prepare engineers (IPN- ESIME) I obtained my first employment (fortunately it was fast - to be precise 3 months after I got my bachelor’s degree, special thanks to my best friend Jorge Cruz for his referral). The employer company was an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and my job role was Support Engineer. The portfolio offered for this company was basically Internet Access Plans and some other products for e-commerce based on EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) defined by NIST in 1996. During that time Internet connectivity from home or majority of small and medium businesses was achieved through phone line taking advantage on PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) using internal and/or external modems connected to computers or laptop. Configuration of PPP parameters (Point to Point Protocol) using a customized dial-up client software or terminal services provided by the Operating System a session was established from that remote location to a RADIUS server with a pool of modems located at the ISP Data Center to allow or deny service as per the customer paid plan. RADIUS server would provide AAA services (Authentication, Authorization & Accounting).

As a Support Engineer you would provide not only customer support but also internal support to the Network Infrastructure. I remember how funny was playing with terminal services and use a combination of AT commands to achieve the “perfect” establishment of connectivity through a modem device.

How I could imagine that few years later I would have my meeting with other kind of modulation-demodulation devices.
