If you read my post regarding a fancy Xircom PCMCIA combo card picture (modem & NIC all-in-one) you will understand why I chose that.
While I was in college I was interested in become a programming expert but for some strange reason when I tried to focus my effort on that, surprisingly something related to networking was always crossing my path. Once while looking for a programming training course I found a class to take it on Sundays. My first day on that course, instructor had an issue to arrive to the training center and I was invited to take a free class of ... guess what? Networking. After that class and several previous signs like these I decided to complete this course and forget about programming for a while (I must thinking again on that, Python might be). During this Networking course I learned about Ethernet, OSI Model, Protocols,TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, etc. Additionally how to use Network Operating Systems like Windows NT & Novell Netware mostly.
When I worked for the ISP I took a call from one of the most important customers for us; Four Seasons Hotel located in Mexico City.
They were using Novell for the network services and some of the solutions we provided to them ran on top of it. Fortunately my knowledge acquired in Novell allowed me to solve quickly problems they were experiencing with some mapped drives & Netware client issues. My extra curricular Networking training paid off, I realized that being agnostic it is always better than getting stuck to any particular product or technology and most importantly, continuous learning.
Later on, I was hired to work on this hotel for IT management (not only for internal support but also to attend guest requirements). While working here I was on the middle of the Y2K thing and at the same time, planning to deploy what it would be the first wireless infrastructure at the hotel.
Back then there were not several brands to choose so I helped to deploy the first Wi-Fi Network at the hotel using Orinocco. It was based on the the 802.11 "prime" standard.

Years later this infrastructure would be replaced by Xirrus architecture. I was involved on this project from scratch. I still remember using some tools doing that.
